"Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth." Statement from the publisher.

Satoru Iwata started working for Nintendo in the 1980s as a programmer, he was the main force for games like Kirby creating Dream Land for the Game Boy in 1992.  He was appointed as the director if Nintendo in the year 200 and then shortly after became President in 2002.

Iwata's main focus was open communication with the fans of Nintendo.  He also oversaw the launch of the Wii in the mid 2000s which was an enormous victory for him and Nintendo.

Nintendo has stated they have not decided on a successor to Iwata, for now Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda will jointly run the company.
